RHP Albert Abreu placed third in the first Prospect Hot Sheet of the minor league season. He struck out eleven in his first start of the season the other day, and the Hot Sheet write-up says he touched 100 mph with his fastball. Abreu was not among the pitchers to reach 100 mph in the minors last year, so that’s new.
Triple-A Scranton (2-1 loss to Buffalo)
- SS Tyler Wade: 1-3, 1 K, 1 SB, 1 HBP, 1 E (fielding) — still no time in the outfield
(or a position other than short, for that matter)… he did play one game at second base though
- CF Mason Williams: 0-1, 2 BB, 1 CS
- LF Dustin Fowler: 0-4, 2 K — off to a 4-for-28 (.143) start
- 2B Rob Refsnyder: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K
- LHP Dietrich Enns: 5 IP 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 6/4 GB/FB — 47 of 71 pitches were strikes (66%) … Shane Hennigan says Enns left the game with shoulder discomfort and will see a doctor tomorrow, so that’s not good … he’s not high up on the depth chart, but pitching is pitching
- RHP Ben Heller: 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 HB, 1/2 GB/FB — 16 of 29 pitches were strikes (55%)
Double-A Trenton (4-1 win over Portland)
- CF Rashad Crawford: 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B
- SS Gleyber Torres: 0-4, 1 R, 1 K — in a 3-for-16 (.188) slump … the Curse of the Prospect Watch!
- 3B Miguel Andujar: 0-4, 2 K — another error … that’s four in seven games at third base after a rough spring defensively
- 1B Mike Ford: 2-2, 1 R, 1 3B, 2 RBI, 1 BB
- LF Billy McKinney: 1-3, 1 2B, 2 K, 1 E (throwing)
- RHP Yefrey Ramirez: 6 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, 3/8 GB/FB — 47 of 85 pitches were strikes (55%) … much better second start … he didn’t make it out of the fourth in his season debut
- LHP Caleb Frare: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 2/1 GB/FB — 18 of 25 pitches were strikes (72%), plus he picked a runner off first, which is his thing
High-A Tampa (3-1 win over Bradenton)
- CF Jorge Mateo: 1-4, 3 K
- SS Kyle Holder: 0-4 — now 1-for-34 (.029) on the season, but the one is a homer … I’m oddly curious to see how long he can go before getting his second hit
- DH Tito Polo: 0-2, 1 K
- LF Trey Amburgey: 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K
- 2B Nick Solak: 1-3, 1 K
- 3B Abi Avelino: 1-3, 1 K, 1 SB
- LHP Ian Clarkin: 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 8 K, 8/0 GB/FB — 55 of 93 pitches were strikes (59%) … the good version of Clarkin showed up … hope to see a lot more of this guy this year
Low-A Charleston (9-2 loss to Rome)
- SS Hoy Jun Park: 1-4, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 SB
- 2B Diego Castillo: 1-5, 2 K, 1 E (fielding)
- LF Blake Rutherford: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K — he’s slipped into an 0-for-13 slump, though he has six walks and four strikeouts during that time, so it’s not like he’s been hopeless at the plate
- CF Estevan Florial: 0-3, 1 BB, 2 K — 3-for-18 (.167) with 12 strikeouts in his last five games
- 3B Oswaldo Cabrera: 2-4, 1 SB — the youngest player in the South Atlantic League (by 102 days!) is 8-for-25 (.320) through seven games
- RF Leonardo Molina: 0-4, 1 K, 1 E (missed catch)
- RHP Jio Orozco: 4.2 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 3 BB, 1 K, 1 WP, 1 HB, 4/4 GB/FB — 53 for 82 pitches were strikes (65%)
