- I enjoyed Jon Tayler’s article on players who have bounced around on waivers all offseason, like Richie Shaffer (Mariners to Phillies to Reds to Indians) and David Rollins (Mariners to Cubs to Rangers to Phillies to Rangers to Cubs). “Every call I get from a number I don’t know, I’m always like ‘What is this.’ My wife panics every time I’m talking on the phone,” said Shaffer.
- On a similar note, check out Dan Lumpkin’s post on the different ways the Rule 5 Draft has helped players. “Everyone started paying more attention to me. I got more chances to play and prove myself. It was for the best but I know it’s not the same for everybody,” said Ender Inciarte, who didn’t stick as a Rule 5 Draft pick with the Phillies back in the day, but received more attention after being returned to the Diamondbacks.
- And finally, don’t miss Andy McCullough on the rise and fall and rise again of Rich Hill. Hill learned to throw left-handed after his brother literally tied his right hand behind his back, and after years of injuries, he decided to stop listening to coaches and do things his way two years ago. After a decade of failure on the field, Hill finally found success and cashed in big at age 36.
Friday: Here is tonight’s open thread. The Islanders, Devils, and Nets are all playing tonight, and that’s it. No college hoops on the schedule. Discuss those games, the links, or anything else here, as long as it’s not religion or politics.
Saturday: This is the open thread again. The Islanders, Devils, and Knicks are all in action, and there’s some college basketball on too. You folks know how these things work by now, so have at it.
Sunday: For the final time, this is the open thread. As I’m sure you know, the Patriots and Falcons are playing in the Super Bowl tonight (6:30pm ET on FOX). The Rangers are also playing right now. That’s about it. Enjoy the game.
