2012 Draft: Yankees sign sixth rounder Rob Refsnyder

July 6, 2012 by Mike 12 Comments

Via Jim Callis, the Yankees have signed sixth round pick Rob Refsnyder for roughly $206k, the full slot value for the 187th overall pick. That leaves the Yankees with $1,606,300 worth of draft pool money to offer first rounder Ty Hensley without facing penalties. They can pay him up to $1,815,910 by exceeding their draft pool by 5%, which would result in a tax but not forfeiture of next year’s first rounder.

Refsynder, an outfielder at Arizona who the Yankees will try at second base, is a big-time contact hitter with a swing geared for doubles into the gaps rather than homers of the fence. He’s an average defensive player in the corner outfield and hasn’t played the middle infield regularly since high school. Refsnyder was recently named the College World Series Most Outstanding Player and is a pretty interesting conversion candidate as an offense-minded second baseman. 2012 Draft: Yankees “close” to signing sixth rounder Rob Refsnyder

July 5, 2012 by Mike 25 Comments

Scouting director Damon Oppenheimer told Josh Norris that the Yankees are “close” to signing sixth rounder 2B/OF Rob Refsnyder, though the deal is not done yet. Refsnyder was named the College World Series Most Outstanding Player two weeks ago after leading his Arizona Wildcats to the national championship. Based on his Twitter feed, he’s in Tampa at the moment.

In other news, Oppenheimer said the Yankees are still “trying” to hammer out a deal with first rounder Ty Hensley. When asked if the two sides were close, he said he “thinks so.” The deadline to sign draft picks is next Friday, July 13th. You can see all of New York’s picks at Baseball America and keep track of the financial situation at our Draft Pool page.
