Sonny Gray started and was outstanding, allowing one run on three hits in five innings. He struck out seven and didn’t walk anyone. Gray pitched righties away all night. I guess he was working on that. Dellin Betances struck out all three men he faced and looked filthy. David Robertson tossed a perfect inning and Aroldis Chapman struck out both men he faced. Good game. Here are the box score and video highlights, and here is the rest of the news from the final day of Spring Training:
- In case you missed it earlier, Greg Bird needs surgery to remove a broken bone spur from his right ankle. He’ll miss 6-8 weeks. Aaron Boone confirmed Tyler Austin will be on the Opening Day roster in Bird’s place. “Hopefully it doesn’t take Bird too long to get back up here because he’s a big part of this team,” said Austin. [Pete Caldera]
- Jacoby Ellsbury (oblique) will remain in Tampa to continue his rehab. Boone said he’ll need about 40-50 at-bats before returning. “We’ll just kind of weigh it every couple days, see where he’s at, and see what our needs are too at the time. Hopefully it’s not too long into the season before we get him back,” said Boone. [Billy Witz]
- Clint Frazier (concussion) played catch and took batting practice over at the minor league complex today. Here’s video of his batting practice, if you’re interested. [Conor Foley]
- Tommy Kahnle, Chad Green, Adam Warren, and Chasen Shreve all threw in minor league games today. Here are the day’s minor league lineups. [Foley]
Up next: Opening Day. But first: Two off-days. The Yankees will catch their breath Tuesday and Wednesday before beginning the 2018 season against the Blue Jays in Toronto on Thursday. That’s a 3:37pm ET start. Luis Severino and J.A. Happ are the scheduled starting pitchers. Fun fun fun.
