Game 102: Ivan's final game as a Yankee?
Nova hit hard, bats go quiet in 5-1 loss to Rays

High-A Tampa manager Pat Osborn spoke to Randy Miller about a whole bunch of his players, so check that out. Buried within the feature are a few injury updates. Here they are as well as the rest of the day’s notes:

  • LHP Ian Clarkin is done for the season with “a little meniscus issue that he’s getting repaired,” according to Osborn. I assume the “getting repaired” thing means surgery. Sucks. The good news is Clarkin’s arm is healthy. He was still able to throw 98 innings after missing all of last season with an elbow injury.
  • LHP Jacob Lindgren is currently throwing off a mound, which indicates he might actually pitch in games again at some point this season. He threw seven innings with High-A Tampa in April before getting shut down with some sort of elbow problem. Lindgren has surgery to remove a bone spur last year, remember.
  • This year Yankees’ farmhands will play for the Scottsdale Scorpions in the Arizona Fall League, the league announced (PDF link). Last year they were on the Surprise Saguaros. Scottsdale will have have Angels, Phillies, Mets, and Giants prospects as well. The AzFL rosters are usually announced in late-August. Someone should really send me a mailbag question about who the Yankees might send this year, wink wink nudge nudge.
  • Both OF Dustin Fowler (No. 9) and OF Blake Rutherford (No. 18) made this week’s Prospect Hot Sheet, so make sure check that out. Rutherford’s hitting .370/.430/.617 (182 wRC+) in his first 22 pro games. That’ll do, kid.

Triple-A Scranton (1-0 loss to Pawtucket)

  • CF Mason Williams: 0-4
  • DH Ben Gamel: 1-4, 1 K
  • 1B Tyler Austin: 1-3, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 K — 23-for-59 (.390) with six doubles, five homers, 15 walks, and 14 strikeouts in his last 18 games
  • RF Jake Cave: 0-3, 2 K
  • LHP Dietrich Enns: 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 5/3 GB/FB — 53 of 89 pitches were strikes (60%) … tenth time in 19 starts he’s allowed one earned run or less
  • RHP Conor Mullee: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, 2/0 GB/FB — all seven pitches were strikes … this starts his 20-day rehab assignment clock … he’s currently on the MLB DL with a hand/nerve issue
  • RHP Jonathan Holder: 1 IP, zeroes, 1 K, 1/0 GB/FB — ten of 14 pitches were strikes (71%) … 72/7 K/BB in 50 innings at three levels this year

Double-A Trenton (3-1 win over Altoona)

  • SS Tyler Wade & RF Billy McKinney: both 1-4 — Wade got picked off second
  • CF Dustin Fowler: 2-3, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 CS, 1 HBP — 18-for-43 (.419) during his eleven-game hitting streak
  • 3B Miguel Andujar: 1-4, 1 R, 1 K
  • C Kyle Higashioka: 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 K — nine walks and eight strikeouts in his last 16 games
  • 2B Abi Avelino: 1-3, 1 RBI
  • RHP Ronald Herrera: 6.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 1 WP, 8/6 GB/FB — 64 of 98 pitches were strikes (65%)

High-A Tampa (2-1 with over Palm Beach)

  • 2B Jorge Mateo: 1-4 — 6-for-37 (.162) since coming back from the suspension, so he’s really showing them
  • CF Rashad Crawford: 0-4, 2 K — 0-for-12 since the trade
  • SS Gleyber Torres: 2-4, 1 R, 2 2B — mmhmm
  • RF Jeff Hendrix: 1-4, 1 R, 1 3B, 1 RBI, 1 K
  • LF Trey Amburgey: 1-4, 2 K, 1 SB
  • RHP Yefrey Ramirez: 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, 2 WP, 3/5 GB/FB — 57 of 85 pitches were strikes (67%) … he’s at 97.2 innings right now and his previous career high is the 69 innings he threw last year, so chances are he’ll be on tight pitch counts from here on out

Low-A Charleston (3-1 win over Lexington)

  • CF Ricardo Ferreira: 1-3, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 SB, 1 E (fielding)
  • SS Hoy Jun Park: 1-4, 1 RBI
  • RF Jhalan Jackson: 0-4, 1 K
  • C Luis Torrens: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 PB
  • LF Alex Palma: 2-3, 1 RBI — .281/.299/.446 with a 13.6% strikeout rate and a 2.7% walk rate as a 20-year-old in the South Atlantic League is pretty darn good … just gotta learn a little patience, Alex, just because you can reach it doesn’t mean you have to swing at it
  • 3B Mandy Alvarez: 2-3, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 1 RBI — second homer in 34 pro games for Mandy
  • RHP Anyelo Gomez: 6 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 3/10 GB/FB — 57 of 88 pitches were strikes (65%)

Short Season Staten Island (6-4 win over Vermont)

  • LF Carlos Vidal: 1-4, 1 R, 1 3B, 1 BB, 2 K
  • 2B Nick Solak: 1-1, 1 R, 1 HBP — left the game two innings after the hit-by-pitch, so that’s not good
  • 3B Drew Bridges: 1-4, 1 K
  • RF Timmy Robinson: 0-3, 2 K, 1 HBP
  • CF Dom Thompson-Williams: 3-4, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K — second homer in his last six innings
  • SS Angel Aguilar: 0-3, 1 K
  • RHP Freicer Perez: 3 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 5 BB, 2 K, 1 HB, 0/4 GB/FB — 36 of 74 pitches were strikes (49%) … 6-foot-8 20-year-olds are going to have games like this
  • RHP David Palladino: 0.2 IP, 0 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 5 BB, 1 K, 1/0 GB/FB — ten of 30 pitches were strikes … 47/29 K/BB in 31 innings

Rookie Pulaski (11-0 loss to Burlington)

  • CF Estevan Florial: 0-3, 1 BB, 2 K — threw a runner out at second
  • SS Wilkerman Garcia: 0-4, 2 K
  • LF Blake Rutherford: 1-1 — singled in the first inning for their only hit of the game, then was removed for a pinch-hitter … manager Tony Franklin told Josh Norris that Rutherford was just feeling a little lightheaded and sick, so it’s not an injury … exhale
  • 3B Dermis Garcia: 0-3, 3 K
  • DH Oswaldo Cabrera: 0-3
  • RHP Julian Aybar: 4.2 IP, 10 H, 9 R, 9 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 2 HB, 4/4 GB/FB

Rookie GCL Yanks East (3-2 win over GCL Pirates)

  • LF Terrance Robertson: 1-4, 2 R, 1 RBI, 3 SB — last year: 39/7 K/BB and 4-for-7 in steals in 38 games … this year: 16/14 K/BB and 10-for-11 in steals in 19 games
  • 1B Brandon Wagner: 0-3
  • DH Edel Luaces: 0-1, 2 BB — got picked off first
  • CF Jordan Scott: 1-2, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 CS, 1 E (fielding)
  • RHP Daniel Alvarez: 5.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 1 WP, 1 HB, 7/4 GB/FB — 27/8 K/BB in 35.2 innings for the 20-year-old

Rookie GCL Yanks West (7-6 loss to GCL Tigers West)

  • 3B Nelson Gomez: 3-5, 2 R, 1 2B, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 1 E (throwing) — two-homer games in the GCL are pretty rare, these kids usually haven’t grown into any power yet … only 41 players in the league have hit multiple homers this season … there are 17 teams in the league, figure 12 position players per team, that’s 204 total players not counting all the guys who pass through, and yet still only 41 with more than one homer … so yeah, two-dinger games are rare … that’s why the Yankees gave Gomez $2.25M
  • DH Donny Sands: 0-5
  • 1B Miguel Flames: 1-3, 1 BB — five strikeouts and seven walks in his last 14 games
  • SS Diego Castillo: 1-4, 1 K, 2 E (fielding, missed catch)
  • RHP Gilmael Troya: 3 IP, 8 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 WP, 1 Balk, 3/5 GB/FB
  • RHP Brian Keller: 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, 7/3 GB/FB — 23/1 K/BB in 20 innings for this year’s 39th rounder
